Soccer Crazy Costa Rica!

Saprissa vs. Houston
Soccer may not be the most popular game in North America, but it definitely rules Costa Rica. Fans are passionate and live and die by their teams. The most famous team in the country is without a doubt Saprissa, San Jose´s team. They have the largest stadium (Ricardo Saprissa), the craziest fans (La Ultra) and the most success of any team in Central America.

Saprissa recently won a quarter final match against Atlante of Mexico. They will now be facing Houston Dynamo from the United States in a much anticipated semi final. What makes this story particularly amazing is that Costa Rica boast a population of only four million, yet they consistently compete well on both the international and and club levels. Let us not forget that it was Costa Rica who opened the World Cup in Germany just a few years ago. Yes, these Ticos are GOOD.

What does all of this mean and why is this making an appearance on our Blog? Because if you are in Costa Rica during either of the two games that will be played, you must do whatever it takes to catch them. So where should you go?

Game 1, April 2nd
Played in Houston at 9pm central.

It does not matter what city you are in, you will want to find the closest pub or bar and take in the amazing atmosphere. Make sure to wear purple to ensure you fit in nicely and try to avoid cheering for the other team, especially if Saprissa is losing.

Game 2, April 9th
Played in Tibas, Costa Rica (time tbd)

There is only one place to watch this game, and that is at the famous Saprissa stadium. Just a few tips. Avoid the south section of the stadium, as that is where the Ultra go to cheer their team, and it can get out of hand at times. The best sections to catch the game are Palco and Platea. Once again, a little purple would not hurt. You can easily buy a Saprissa shirt outside the stadium.
