Drake Bay Beach

The beach at Drake Bay is nothing that blew my mind away. It is a rustic beach, with a few fishing boats anchored in the Pacific. Very few people actually spend time swimming or relaxing on the beach. But this is not why people travel to Drake Bay. Drake Bay is one of the most isolated and beautiful places in Costa Rica. Famous for its diving, snorkeling and deep sea fishing, Drake Bay often the top choice for lovers of any of those activities.

When it comes to beaches, you aren’t completely out of luck in Drake Bay. One of my favorite things to do in all of Costa Rica, is to rent a kayak for $20, and do some ocean kayaking in the Pacific. The current is significant, and it is always exhausting on the way back to shore, but the sights, and amazing secluded beaches are well worth the effort. As you kayak on the Pacific Coast, you will have your choice of beaches to choose from. My friends and I enjoy bringing food with us in bags, and having a little picnic on our private piece of paradise.

A few words of caution. Make sure you bring enough water. There are no stores on the Coast once you leave Drake Bay. The first time we went out we made the mistake of only bringing one liter of water, and it got quite dangerous on the way back. You can read all about this little adventure in my previous post about Drake Bay.

Also, make sure if you decide to come to Drake Bay, that you avoid at all costs driving there. The eight hour drive is a little much from San Jose, and a 45 minute flight ensures you aren’t burnt out when getting there. Others choose to boat in from Sierpe, which is a pretty good option, as long as you were already staying in the area.
