Costa Rica World Cup Update

Costa Rica’s national football (soccer) team’s hopes of making the 2010 World Cup in South Africa have taken a turn for the worse. After having defeated Trinidad and Tobago on Saturday 4-0 and reclaiming the third and final automatic World Cup birth, Costa Rica traveled to Washington and had to settle for a draw yesterday . The United States hit two goals in the final 20 minutes (including one in the 5thminute of stoppage time!!) to level the match and send the Costa Ricans home destroyed in 4th place and with a date with a powerful Uruguayan squad.

As we have discussed previously on this blog Costa Rica is soccer crazy and although there will not be a national day of mourning after this defeat, travelers in Costa Rica this morning will definitely get the distinct impression that all is not right with the normally cheerful Ticos.
