Coco Beach

Coco Beach is located in Northern Guanacaste in Costa Rica. It is the closest beach to Liberia International airport, just 20 minutes away. Coco beach is also only 30 minutes from Guanacaste’s largest city, and current soccer champions, Liberia. Due to these two facts, Coco beach is also one of the most booming areas in all of Costa Rica. It is also only 45 minutes from the famous national park Rincon de la Vieja. I have been living here only 4 years, and can already barely recognize the Coco beach I first encountered back in 2005.

The beach itself is not the most beautiful in the country by any means. The scenery is gorgeous, as you look out into the Pacific Ocean. Unless you are high on the hill top, you will most likely miss the sunset that sets to the left of the beach over a ridge. There is a small marina that sits out at sea, and that many are pushing for a massive expansion, although there is heavy opposition by the locals.

Coco beach has a pretty bad reputation locally, known for a meeting place of Egg Eaters, a term given to those who tend to drive down for the day, and go back to the city by nightfall. This is thanks to the accessibility of the beach to locals. I was there for New Year’s Eve once, and was amazed to see the streets absolutely packed with people. I was a little upset by the fact that thousands of people were drinking all night with no bathrooms in sight. Good thing we spend the night in a club and had ourselves a great time.

If you are to stay in Coco Beach, I strongly suggest staying at Pacifico. It is a wonderful condo resort with an absolutely beautiful pool area, and private beach club located directly on the beach with two infinity pools and top end restaurant. All in all, I must say there are better beaches to visit if you will only be here for a week or two.
