If you are looking for an affordable lodging option in downtown San Jose Costa Rica, then the Balmoral hotel just may be your best option. The Balmoral hotel in San Jose is an older hotel, with a distinctive look, however, it has been making some large improvements and renovations, none more noticeable than the Patio area that offers Costa Rica its first great open air Patio experience.

The street located in front of the Balmoral hotel is for pedestrians only, and is packed pretty much all day. Located across from the Balmoral hotel in San Jose is the renowned Hotel Presidente, its four star counter part, and much pricier option. The Balmoral Hotel offers a gym, however, when touring the hotel I was greatly disappointing with the low standard of the equipment and the size of the room that they called a gym.

Driving to Hotel Balmoral can be a little tricky as well, due to the driving conditions in the Central Valley. The parking area is also hard to find, as the main entrance only has space for a few cars. The lobby area in the hotel is average at best, as they are in desperate need of changing their carpet. But these small details can easily be disregarded when you see the affordable prices offered by the Hotel Balmoral. The nightly entertainment and lively atmosphere also make this one the hottest spots in all of San Jose. The location also can’t be beat, as you are but a few steps away from the National Museum, Avenida Central and the Gold Museum.

It is also ideally located next to Multiplaza in Escazu, Costa Rica’s top shopping center. The Intercontinental is definitely the best choice for those looking to host a conference in Costa Rica. This may not, however, be the best choice for those looking for a traditional Costa Rican experience.

La Catalina Hotel and Suites is located in Heredia, just a few miles just outside the Capital City of San Jose. La Catalina has 29 rooms divided into 6 different categories. Some of the highlights of this hotel are a professionally equipped private gym, two swimming pools, a fireplace, a private library, a bar, Internet, cable TV, a tennis court, and a cigar bar. If your looking for warm climate, this is not the place for you. La Catalina is a rustic hotel situated in the mountains, and enjoys a cool breeze throughout most of the day. It’s a good option for those looking for a place to stay on their first or last night, but I would not suggest staying more than a night there. Their restaurant is excellent, even they seemed to be a little short staffed when we were there.

Some of the highlights of this hotel include a delightful restaurant, a myriad of gardens, a spa and a business center with free internet access. This hotel is perfect for one night stays. Any more than that may leave you feeling bored. The location away from Santa Ana make it a poor choice for those without a car. This hotel is really geared for people looking for something very unique and who appreciate art. We believe this is a true gem in the Central Valley.

This hotel has 100 spacious rooms. Some of Hotel Presidente’s amenities are a swimming pool, fitness room, a spa and sauna also. The hotel is known for its beautiful suites, and definitely answers the call to provide a high level of service to its guests. Being in downtown San Jose is not for all, as it is a busy area and also not ideal for walking at night, but for those looking for some nightlife this hotel just may be your best choice to provide fun and security. It is important to note that Prostitution is legal in Costa Rica, and that this hotel does permit working girls to enter with guests. Hotel Presidente is the only hotel with security at both entrances, and that enforce a strict dress code.

It is ideal for those wanting to be close enough to the airport to get there under 30 minutes, but far enough to be away from the noise and traffic of the big city.

Irazu’s complex features 325 rooms and is a nice fit for those travelers looking for a very comfortable and clean three star hotel. Some of the highlights of the hotel are the casino, pool, sauna, a tennis court and even a Denny’s restaurant. The bar is also a popular spot for tourists often playing live music. The drawback to this hotel is the lack of charm and Costa Rican flavor.
