The turtle Beach Lodge is our top choice for hotels in the Tortuguero area. This hotel is known for its turtle shaped pool and is a leader in term of sustainable tourism ensuring both the local community and environment will flourish for years to come. This hotel only offers all inclusive packages, which includes both food and activities. Park entrances, pop, and alcoholic beverages are all extra, similar to the other hotels in the area.

La Catalina Hotel and Suites is located in Heredia, just a few miles just outside the Capital City of San Jose. La Catalina has 29 rooms divided into 6 different categories. Some of the highlights of this hotel are a professionally equipped private gym, two swimming pools, a fireplace, a private library, a bar, Internet, cable TV, a tennis court, and a cigar bar. If your looking for warm climate, this is not the place for you. La Catalina is a rustic hotel situated in the mountains, and enjoys a cool breeze throughout most of the day. It’s a good option for those looking for a place to stay on their first or last night, but I would not suggest staying more than a night there. Their restaurant is excellent, even they seemed to be a little short staffed when we were there.

Perched on top of a hill, La Mariposa, in Manuel Antonio offers what is without a doubt the most amazing view in the area. The only spot where you can see Quepos and the National Park. The restaurant is often booked and requires you to reserve at least a day ahead of time if it is during the high season. What this hotel is in need of is a renovation regarding its rooms. the beds are fine, but the tiles on the floor and some of the decorations need some touching up. Since the new infinity pool has been installed, the outdoor area is as nice as it gets.

Mawamba Lodge is located in Tortuguero on the Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. Mawamba has 36 comfortable, yet basic rooms. Some of the amenities of this hotel are a pool surrounded by exotic gardens, two family-style restaurants, a sand volleyball court, and a conference room where daily lectures on Tortuguero’s natural history are presented. This is a very rustic hotel, and is not for those looking for a high class stay, then again, no hotel in Tortuguero would answer those needs.

Home to Fuego del Sol is Hermosa beach, a lesser known beach, however in my opinion, more beautiful than the now overrated Jaco beach. This hotel has 21 rooms. Some of the highlights of this hotel are a pool, a bar and a restaurant. My favorite room is the Jr. Suite with ocean view. This hotel should be for those who are serious about wanting to learn to surf, as there is not much else to do on Hermosa Beach.

Pirate Cove is a small hotel located in the Osa Peninsula. This hotel has 7 cabins that are hidden among the rainforest trees. Some extras at this hotel are hot water, ceiling fan and private terrace with hammock. This is basically what you can expect at any hotel in the area. Hotels do not offer AC in this area as it takes away from the rustic experience Osa visitors look for. Most visitors also come here to visit quite possibly the most beautiful national park in Costa Rica, as well as some Deep Sea fishing and scuba diving.

Sapo Dorado is a hotel located in Monteverde Cloud Forest. Sapo Dorado has three types of room: Classic Mountain Suites, Fountain Suites and Sunset Terrace Suites. My favorite type of room has to be a tie between the Classic suite, which has a fireplace and very modern bathroom, and the Sunset suite which has quite possibly one of the best views of Monteverde, seeing as far out as the Pacific ocean. Some of the highlights of this hotel are a private entrance and porch, two restaurants, one of which is the most popular bar in the area. We consider this to be one of the better choices in the Monteverde area.

Guarana is a small hotel located in Puerto Viejo, 200mts away from the beach on the Caribbean coast. The beach however, is not one that you would want to swim in since it is extremely rocky. All of the hotels located directly in Puerto Viejo are located to that same beach. Guests staying in town have to travel a few kms to get to the first beach. From there it is beach after beach, giving travelers an amazing range of choices. Some beaches are for surfers, and others offer calm waters. This small hotel provides 12 rooms and two tree houses. Some of the highlight of this hotel are a kitchen facility open to all those on a budget, clean and comfortable rooms, as well as private bathrooms and hot water.

Shawandha Lodge is located in playa Chiquita in Puerto Viejo on South Caribbean Coast of Costa Rica. Shawandha provides 13 bungalows without air-conditioning and TV. Ideal for those looking to forget stressful modern life. Some of the highlights of this Lodge are individual cabins tucked away in the jungle providing each of its guests a spiritual experience. The bathrooms have really interesting designs. The cabins are very romantic and perfect for couples wanting to spend time together somewhere special. There is a pool being built that should be ready by Feb, 2009.
