Las Delicias del Maiz Costa Rica

Ah yes, the famous Las Delicias del Maiz restaurant chain in Costa Rica has quite the group of faithful locals. The most popular Las Delicias del Maiz all is located on the highway heading towards Jaco and Manuel Antonio from the Central Valley.

You´ll spot the occasional tourist in there, by the place is primarily filled by Costa Ricans. Las Delicias del Maiz is popular due to their home-style of cooking that remains faithful to tradition meals in Costa Rica. You´ll see lots of beans, rice, chicken and platanos on the menu. The most common dish, just like in any restaurant in Costa Rica, is the Casado, which in English means married. They use the name Casado because that is exactly what the dish entails, a bunch of different foods that have been wed for one delicious meal. You can find anything on your plate, from rice, chicken, salad, to even a hearty serving of pasta (my least favorite of the bunch due to the overall messiness of the plate.

If you ever walk inside Las Delicias del Maiz in any location in Costa Rica, be prepared to feel a little confused. The restaurant kind of has a free for all atmosphere that leaves you a little lost. Some restaurant require you to go to the window, order all of your food, bring your plate to the cashier, and pay there. What I don´t like very much, is that you will not know the price of your meal until you arrive at the cashier section. You don´t have to worry much, as prices are very cheap here, which is another major draw for Costa Ricas. So if you´re on a roadtrip in Costa Rica and have a big appetite, don´t feel like waiting for your food, and are looking for a good price, Las Delicias del Maiz is the right restaurant for you.

Super Pollo Restaurant – San Joaquin de Heredia

Super Pollo is located in San Joaquin de Heredia. As the name demonstrates, their specialty is chicken. We suggest trying the chicken burger, as that is what they are mostly known for in the area. You could also order a pizza or a typical casado.

Staying in Heredia and looking for the flavors of the Caribbean? Than this is the restaurant for you. Located 50 meters north of the Central Park of Heredia, this locally owned restaurant is a popular spot for locals, as well as tourists. Their Rice and Beans are as good as it gets in Heredia. You can expect to pay around $6 a plate here, and the portions are fairly reasonable. The only thing I did not enjoy were the walls which were in need of a good cleaning and the small bathroom tucked away in the back. The kitchen is open for all to see, and is well taken care of (thank goodness for that).

Camaron Dorado Restaurant – Flamingo Beach

The Camaron Dorado restaurant is one of my favorite destinations while in the Flamingo Beach area in Costa Rica. This restaurant is located directly on the beach and is a big hit among seafood lovers. Their specialty, as the name suggests, is shrimp and lobster. Given the location and the quality of the food, the prices are very reasonable. You can order a lobster or steak for less than $16! Another nice touch are the tables that are set literally in the sand. This is one of the last restaurants in all of Costa Rica that is still permitted to be within 50 meters of the Coast line.

Pizzeria de Johnny Restaurant

There is nothing fancy about this pizza shop, it is just your classic pizza join that prepares all of their pizza’s on a fire grill. I enjoyed my pizza thoroughly and thought the vibe was fitting for Monteverde. I have been all over Costa Rica, and no city loves their pizza more than Monteverde. I guess it has something to do with the fact that Monteverde is located high up in the mountain and can be quite cold, almost like an autumn night in Canada.

Sash Restaurant

If your looking for Mediterranean cuisine while in Costa Rica, Sash just may be one of your best options. This restaurant is divided into three sections. They have a lounge area upstairs that is only open from Thursday to Saturday. They usually spin some house music on those nights. On the lower level you have two sections, one open area and a smaller, more intimate and romantic section. In the romantic section, there are really neat areas where you can draw a curtain around your table to give you more privacy.

La Casona del Cerdo Restaurant

Translate to the house of pork in English. This restaurant is not for those looking to eat healthy as the name suggests. This is a popular night spot for Costa Ricans looking to drink some beers and eat some bocas (apps). I wouldn’t say this restaurant is good for families, even though families eat there quite often. It’s a darker place with lots of smoking (yes, it is still legal here) and sometimes loud music, especially their live shoes. My favorite one is about 10 minutes from the airport towards Heredia.

Corteza Amarilla Restaurant

Corteza Amarilla just may be one of my favorite restaurants due to its unique decor and amazing food. This restaurant/ boutique hotel offers an experience unlike any other in the Central Valley. Located about 10 minutes from Santa Ana, this restaurant was decorated by the owner who has a passion for gutting old homes and mansions and taking the most precious parts to his boutique hotel. The price of a plate varies from $10 to $25 and is high end. The only real negative is the fact that there is only one server working most of the time, affecting the level of service you will get. EXT gives this restaurant a rating of 4.5/5.

Baalbek Restaurant

Great views, decent service, and overpriced menu basically sums up this restaurant. Located in the mountains of San Rafael, Baalbec caters to the upper class of the area. This large restaurant offers four different environments to its clients. A lounge area, main restaurant and bar are all nice to eat at, but my favorite place is the open air upstairs area where you can lean on a counter and take in a view that is hard to beat. There are also a couple of small rooms you can reserve with a fireplace for more privacy. These rooms are as good for romance as they would be for business. Baalbec’s specialty is Mediterranean food. Not the best in Costa Rica, but is still tasty. The biggest drawback has to be the pricey menu. EXT gives Baalbec a rating of 4/5.

La Casa de Doña Lela Restaurant

Translates to Home of Mrs. Lela Restaurant. This is one of the most famous typical restaurants in Costa Rica. You will usually see more locals than tourists in this restaurant. All of the restaurants are located in the Central Valley. Rice, chicken, beans, pico de gallo, arroz con leche are basically what you can expect to see on your plate. Prices range from $5 to $8 a plate. You can find much better prices if you eat out at a local Soda, however most tourist feel more comfortable eating in a restaurant that seems to be cleaner and more like a restaurant back home. All of the waiters wear old typical Costa Rican clothes, along with the famous Costa Rican farmer’s hat. They serve all of their meals on a wooden plate, and on a banana leaf. EXT only gives this restaurant a rating of 2.5/5 because we know there are so many better places to eat out in this country.
