A simple little hang out spot near the mall Cariari. Blue Lounge is not your typical Costa Rican bar, with its spacey design. The open air concept is nice, except on a chilly night of course. Prices are reasonable. What this place lacks more than anything is some life. Its poor location is probably to blame for the low turnouts. Friday nights are best as the locals go there to celebrate the start of the new weekend.

Barba Roja

There is no better place to watch the sunset in Manuel Antonio than at Barba Roja. This restaurant/bar offers a great happy hour from 4pm - 6pm, just in time to watch that famous sunset. The sun almost always sets at 5:30pm. Seafood is their specialty, although I must admit I was not crazy about my dish. I recommend coming here to take in the lively atmosphere and amazing views. It’s a pretty cool spot on weekends also, with music being played at night. They have occasional house music parties with local DJs.

Living - Santa Ana

Living is a small club located in the posh district of Santa Ana in the Central Valley. The crowd at living is an older crowd with a little bit more to spend than the average party animal. Bottle service is big here and you can expect to pay around $200 for your bottle, whether it be vodka or whisky. The DJ usually plays a mix of techno and top forty reggeaton and hip hop. if you plan on going to this club make sure to call and see if they are open or hosting a private party, as both of the above happens more than it should. Living is a nice place to go for a social drink in a fashionable place.

Rapsodia - Great Place for a Social Drink

Rapsodia might not have the best location in town, but it more than makes up for it by having a great atmosphere and good service. This lounge is the ideal spot to hit for drinks prior to heading out to the clubs. The music differs depending on the night, but electronic music is what dominates. On weekends they will usually spotlight a local DJ. You can expect to pay about $3 for a drink here, or $2 for a beer.

The crowd tends to be the more upscale crowd of San Jose. You won´t find many tourists here as it is a local spot. You won´t see much dancing here either, as it is more like a sit down and chill lounge.

The best thing about Rapsodia has to be the outdoor patio. This is definitely a novelty in Costa Rica, as very few places sport this due to the rainy season. Nicely designed couches and tables add to the overall experience. The best times to go is between 11pm and 2am.

Utopia - Santa Ana

Utopia is for the younger crowd looking to dance all night long. The club closes at 4am and hits its peak between midnight and two a.m. Bottle service available, as well as a VIP guestlist. Prices are steep by Costa Rican standards. Make sure to arrive early or have a contact to get you on the list or else be prepared to wait in line for at least an hour. The club has a bad reputation for not letting groups of guys in without girls. They play a mix of everything, from electronic music to hip hop. This is as close as it gets to having a North American club in Costa Rica.
